Pass through the unspoilt countryside of the North Tamar along the Bude Canal, opened in the 1820's. The canal was used to transport calcium rich beach sand to farmers to use as fertiliser; coal, slate and timber was also taken inland and local produce exported. Cornwall's only canal system, which in its heyday was some 35 miles in length, was fed water via the Tamar lakes. The most spectacular features were the incline planes, tub-boats were carried to a height of 430 feet above sea level. This is a pleasant walk combining the grassy coastal cliff paths and inland fields to the quiet and peaceful canal.
