Details of Ottery St Mary
Ottery St Mary, Devon
Surrounded by beautiful farming country, Ottery is one of the South West's oldest towns, dating back over 1000 years. Anglo Saxons designed Ottery with its streets fanning out from a central hub. Its magnificent collegiate church is modelled on Exeter Cathedral and the poet Samuel Coleridge was born in the vicarage. Ottery's most renowned tradition is the Tar Barrel ritual when on November 5th, men women and children race through the streets with blazing barrels soaked with tar on their shoulders - an annual spectacle dating back to 1688.
Twinned with Pont l'Eveque, France
