Details of St. Ives

St. Ives, Cornwall

One of the most well known towns in Cornwall. Magnificently situated, overlooking golden sands, the town has been an artists’ colony for almost 100 years and has the Tate St Ives (opened in 1993), a satellite gallery of the Tate in London. It is, perhaps, the flagship of Cornish art. The Barbara Hepworth Museum, Bernard Leach Pottery and a multitude of other galleries and craft shops can also be found here. The harbour is surrounded by a warren of cobbled alleys and old stone fisherman’s cottages, many with the original steps to the first floor, the ground floor having been an open cellar housing the fishing nets and pilchard presses. Steep sloping passageways and secret corners conceal unexpected delights at almost every turn. The scenic branch line between St Ives and Lelant has been described as one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Britain as the track hugs the edge of the cliff in a spectacular feat of Victorian engineering.

Twinned with Camaret-Sur-Mer, France.
