Cornwall & Devon - for great holidays

Details of Launceston

Launceston, Cornwall

The capital of Cornwall until 1838 and dominated by a Norman Keep on a high hilltop overlooking the town, the outer and inner baileys are from the 12th and 13th centuries. Originally there were three arches, or gateways to the town, one of these, the Southgate Arch, remains to this day. A short stroll through the narrow streets takes you past buildings of all styles and ages; from Tudor and Georgian to gothic Victorian. Castle Street has many Georgian town houses, one of which, Lawrence House, is now a Museum containing the towns history from pre-historic times to the present day. Other places to visit are the steam railway, Trethorne Leisure Farm and nearby Tamar Otter Park.

Twinned with Achim/Wolfenbuttel, Germany and Plestin-Les-Greves, France.
