A classic Cornish fishing village with narrow winding roads, retaining considerable character and charm. The small harbour has a safe, sheltered beach at low tide, and a huge cave to explore a few hundred yards along the coast. The village is famed for its Christmas light display and for Tom Bawcock’s Eve, celebrated on 23 December. According to legend Tow Bawcock saved the village from starvation by setting out to sea in a fierce storm and bringing back a huge haul of 7 kinds of fish – and part of the traditional celebration is ‘star gazey pie’, made from the 7 fish originally caught, and traditionally with pilchard heads sticking out of the pie crust looking towards the stars.
