Gwithian Towans are probably one of the most visited dune areas in Cornwall, and boast some amazing flora and fauna and nationally recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Adjoining Upton Towans was once the site of the National Explosives factory until 1945, but the dunes now almost entirely conceal the history of the site bar the occasional derelict building reminding us of the past. The dunes (or towans in Cornish) border a 3 mile stretch of excellent sands east of St Ives.
