Details of Appledore

Appledore, Devon

Appledore is full of history, with watchtowers, lookouts, a smugglers tunnel, captains' house and a quay overlooking the meeting points of the rivers Torridge and Taw. Its was described by Charles Kingsley as the 'little white fishing village', and is still full of 'olde worlde' charm with narrow cobbled lanes, small fishermen's cottages and a lovely harbour. The village was once famous for smuggling and there is now a maritime museum to help visitors to discover the maritime comection for themselves.
