Cornwall & Devon - for great holidays

Charles Kingsley

Born: 1819
Died: 1875
The only place name in the world to include an exclamation mark, ‘Westward Ho!’ on the North Devon coastline was named after the novel written by Charles Kingsley, who lived nearby, at Bideford; now home to a statue in his memory.

Kingsley drew inspiration for the novel from the pretty, harbour village of Clovelly and today the village has a Kingsley exhibition.
