Kenneth Grahame first came to Fowey in 1899, staying at the Fowey Hotel whilst convalescing from pneumonia. He then became a frequent visitor and it is without a doubt that his famous tale, “The Wind in the Willows”, of four great animal friends and their adventure along the riverbank, were based on boat trips that Grahame often took up the River Fowey to Golant. Grahame also stayed at the Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth.
The stories, still popular with today’s children were originally written as a series of letters between father and son. Those written from the Greenbank Hotel record the earliest appearance of Toad Esq. of Wind in the Willows Tales. Reproductions of these letters are on display at the hotel.
