William Wills was born in Totnes in 1834. He emigrated to Australia and along with his friend Burke, decided to cross Australia from south to north, something never done before. Both Wills and Burke died during the expedition. They are attributed with discovering the Gulf of Carpenteria and with bringing camels from Afghanistan to Australia. There is a memorial obelisk to Wills in Totnes.
