Captain John Davis


Born: 1550
Died: 1605
Elizabethan Navigator and one of Devon’s greatest seaman, born at Sandridge Park near Stoke Gabriel. Conducted three expeditions to the Arctic Seas (1585-1587) in quest of a NW passage to India & China.

In 1587 he discovered the Strait between Greenland and Canada which bears his name. In 1592 he left on an expedition to the South Atlantic and discovered the Falkland Islands. Killed by Japanese pirates near Malacca. He invented the Black Staff, an instrument formerly used for taking the sun’s altitude at sea about 1596.
