Captain Robert Scott was born in Devonport near Plymouth where his father owned a brewery, he started his sailing days in Plymouth and became a captain in the Royal Navy. Between 1901 and 1904 he became a national hero when he set the new ‘furthest south’ record with an expedition taking him to Antarctica. On this occasion he came within 410 miles of the South Pole but was soon to try again in 1910 and left the UK on board the Terra Nova.
On reaching the Pole on 17th January 1912 they found that they had been beaten to it by a month by the Norwegian team. On their way back to base camp, one by one the team members died in what were unpredictably bad weather conditions.
