Drake was born in Tavistock some time between 1541 and 1543, his first trip to sea was at the age of 13, her went on to become a daring seafarer. On board the Golden Hind he circumnavigated the world between 1577 and 1580 – quite an achievement at the time. In 1588 he helped see off the Spanish Armada although just had time to finish his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe before preparing for battle. Drake was appointed Mayor of Plymouth and his statue stands in both Tavistock and on Plymouth’s Hoe. With his plundering Drake was able to buy Buckland Abbey in Buckland Monachorum, he lived here during the 16th century, today Buckland Abbey is owned by the National Trust and open to the public.
