After having been in America for twenty years, Michael Bingham comes home to take up his inheritance, the stately home and landed estate Edgcumbe House. There he meets the 16-year-old Sophie, who works in the National Trust park associated with the estate.
Sophie falls hopelessly in love with the attractive and charming Michael, much to the chagrin of her admirer David, who works in the park as a gardener. Sophie is unaware that her mother Karen was the secret love of Michael's youth. And when Michael meets Karen, their old feelings blaze up again.
The drama between mother and daughter escalates, as the shadows of the past threaten to catch up with Michael: David's father Thomas, the former manager of the estate, wants to revenge himself on Michael, but brings Sophie and his own son into a life-threatening situation.
