The Long Road to Happiness

Director Dieter Kehler. Production 1999. Cast: Barbara Wussow, Harald Krassnitzer.

Preparations for Eleanor and Patrick's wedding are proceeding at full swing when she discovers that her fiancé has been unfaithful to her. She is completely shattered.

She turns to Tom, her best friend, for comfort and understanding. Tom is planning the conversion of the picturesque Brandon Manor, his brother Frederic's hotel. He suggests that Eleanor might like to come down to the hotel on the coast for the weekend. Eleanor, who gave up her job as graphic designer just a few days earlier, feels a change of air would do her good. She agrees, and when they get there Brandon Manor really does seem the ideal place to escape from the cares of the world. The scenery is idyllic, and Catherine, the manager of the hotel, ensures that it runs like clockwork.

On top of everything else, Tom is very considerate towards Eleanor, determined to cheer her up. And the inevitable soon happens - in this romantic setting Tom finally confesses his love for Eleanor, and she finds herself unable to resist. But before long her doubts begin to surface - is this the right time to rush into an affair? Eleanor begins to back away from him. A difficult situation, and even words of advice from Kate and Walter, a happy couple celebrating their silver wedding at the hotel, don't seem to help. Eleanor feels even more uncomfortable when she begins to sense tension between the two brothers.

When she meets Jonathan Marcow, who was a secret admirer of Frederic's late wife, Sarah, a terrible suspicion begins to grow in her. Jonathan is absolutely convinced that Sarah's death was not the accident it appeared to be - he blames Frederic for it. The past is casting its shadow over the present. A tragic tale appears about to repeat itself.
