Since the death of her mother, Emma Litton has been wondering what role she has played, if any, in the life of her elusive artist father. Emma is working as an au-pair in Paris when she finds out that her father has returned to their home in Cornwall. She quits her job and follows him there, in the hopes of getting closer to him.
Even after she meets Robert Morrow, the handsome gallery owner who works with her father, she is more concerned about the approval of her father than anything else. Yet Ben Litton has more important things in mind than spending quiet time bonding with a daughter who apparently does not interest him. Lured to the US by promises of a large exhibit by an attractive, wealthy American, Ben is ready to marry her in no time.
Alone once more, Emma will have to come to terms that her father will never belong to her exclusively. She is ready to map her own separate life with the help of patient Robert.
