Newly-wed Laura Haverstock still feels the shadow of her husband's first wife Erica hanging over her marriage with Alec. Alec avoids talking about Erica and their daughter Gabrielle whom he has not seen for quite a while. His aloofness causes Laura a great deal of insecurity and anxiety.
When she has to have an operation she does not dare ask Alec to postpone his plans for his yearly fishing trip to Scotland. Instead she spends the summer recuperating in Cornwall at the home of Alec's uncle Gerald. She arrives in Cornwall with trepidation. But Alec's relatives are warm and welcoming. They invite people to their home to meet Laura and organize outings in the countryside for her. They cheer her up and convince her that she is the best thing that ever happened to Alec. Laura has found her peace of mind again. She is even more happy when Gabrielle arrives, already a beautiful young woman who immediately gets on well with Laura.
Then, strange things start to happen: threatening letters turn up and Laura's dog is poisoned. Alec looks into the matter only to find out that an old flame of his did all this, jealous that she has lost Alec once again. Having come to terms with Alec's past, Laura can now look forward to a happy future with him.
