Cornwall & Devon - for great holidays

Pilcher Locations - Land's End Peninsula

Land’s End –  the most westerly point of the British Isles and popular attraction. Multimedia displays on mysteries, wrecks and the sea, restaurants and shops. Two lighthouses all just 28 miles from the Scilly Isles.

The final love scene of “The Day of the Storm” was filmed at the cliffs at Land’s End. Around here the film team also used many coastal stretches over the years.

Gwennap Head: 2 miles from Land’s End, National Coastwatch Institution. Scenes for  “Snow in April and recently “Above the Clouds” were shot here. Lovely views onto Eddystone, the Runnels and the lighthouse Wolf Rock. The land is owned by Lord Levan of St Michael’s Mount.

Just north of Land’s End you will find Cape Cornwall. The fields and narrow roads here have been used in many Pilcher adaptations. Nearly all tractor scenes of “The Empty House” take place here. Chapel Field at the Cape was the background in “Above the Clouds“.

The coastal route between Pendeen and Portheras Cove is very beautiful, too. Portheras was the sandy bay, were Viriginia Woolf's children played in “The Empty House”.

Moving north to Zennor you find Gunard’s Head. On the headland stands Cove Cottage, a B&B Pilcher fan’s know from “The Empty House” as Bosithick. It’s the cottage Virginia Woolf chose to stay. You cannot see the cottage unless you enter private ground. Only customers who stay here should be doing this. The cottage is in much better condition than in the film. They made it to look old artificially.

Zennor: Located near St Ives, where Rosamunde Pilcher’s son Mark lives. The local pub, “Tinners Arms” was filming location in “Snow in April” and “The Empty House”.
