Cornwall & Devon - for great holidays

Exmoor

In contrast to Dartmoor, Exmoor is one of England's smallest National Parks. It is softer too, with a charming intimacy and combines high moorland with coastal landscapes and heathland where red deer, grouse, ponies and sheep roam freely. Climb to the top of Dunkery Beacon - at over 1700 feet, Exmoor's highest point - and you can see clear across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

This is the country of RD Blackmore's novel, Lorna Doone. At times, romantically wild and windswept, yet with mild sheltered valleys, Exmoor is particularly regarded for its pretty villages - Winsford, on the Exe River, is a fine example with its hilltop church and thatched inn. And every itinerary for Exmoor should include visits to Parracombe, with its stone cottages, and Dunster whose castle and medieval timbered houses have delighted generations of travellers.
